Choosing Tourer Caravan Insurance

Choosing Tourer Caravan Insurance
By George McGonigal

When choosing tourer Caravan insurance you have to compare not only the cost of the policy but also what features you get and what the exclusions are in the cover. It is essential you do get the correct insurance for your needs as if you should have to make a claim it can be devastating and you could have to pay hundreds if not thousands of pounds out of your own pocket.

The type of tourer Caravan insurance you choose would depend on many factors. For instance if your choice of Caravan was a brand new one off the forecourt or the Caravan was over a certain amount then your choice of insurance would be limited to fully comprehensive insurance. A fully comprehensive policy would offer the most complete form of protection for your own Caravan along with providing cover for any third party involved in an accident with you.

When using the Caravan to tour around you would have to take into account whether you wanted to tour outside of the UK. European cover would provide you with protection that would allow you to call road assistance if you were to breakdown and would usually include being taken to a hotel if your Caravan was damaged beyond repair. The insurance would usually pay for you to stay at a hotel at least for up to so many days while your touring Caravan was being repaired. However the limits to these could vary depending on the provider you chose to take out the insurance with and would need checking in the terms of the policy before taking it out. Some providers offer so many days out of the year with European cover included while with others cover could be unlimited.

Check to find out what kind of protection the policy would include for any personal belongings in the Caravan. The majority of fully comprehensive Caravan insurance will have protection for your belongings but the limits could vary considerably. Items of any particular expense such as jewellery might not be covered in a standard policy so again checking this is essential before buying cover. You could also check to see if new for old is offered in the protection. New for old means that you would be given brand new replacements for any items that had to be replaced. However if the policy includes this it could be dearer than a policy that took depreciation into account when replacing items.

There are ways you could make savings on tourer Caravan insurance. One of the best is to offer to payout a higher excess. All policies will come with a minimum amount of excess but if you offer to pay more the monthly premiums could work out cheaper. The excess is what the insurance company asks you to pay towards the claim before they would take out the rest. While you can save on the cost of insurance this way you would have to payout the excess out of your own pocket should you need to put in a claim and it would have to be a lump sum. If you were to have to make more than one claim in the same year on the policy you could lose out.

Tourer Caravan InsuranceTake a Trip to the Lake District With Your Caravan

Take a Trip to the Lake District With Your Caravan
By H Robinson

With the growing cost of holidaying abroad, the UK can seem like the perfect option for those wanting a few days away. It's even more ideal if you have a touring caravan to hitch up and take your accommodation with you.

There's something to do for all the family. For the literature fans there's Hill Top Farm - the inspiration for Beatrix Potter and her many children's books. Or if you like your walking and beautiful scenery, visit Hawkshead, a picture postcard village surrounded by numerous walks across the hills and mountains.

Tarn Hows is a great place to visit if you like to take your dog on holiday with you as the site is dog friendly. It is also one of the best disabled sites in the Lake District, with several signed walks around the lake that are not too strenuous.

If you're taking the children or grandchildren, then a great place to visit is the Aquarium of the Lakes in Newby Bridge where they can come face to face with sharks, crocodiles and hippos!

If you fancy leaving the children at home and sampling some of the local produce, head to Cockermouth and visit the Jennings Brewery for a guided tour to see how real ale is brewed.

There are many campsites to unhitch your caravan when you arrive, with fantastic scenery and plenty to do. Try searching for campsites and book online. There are many site-finder websites out there that can tell you exactly what each camp site offers and give you full contact details.

Caravan Tyres Causing Insurance Claims

Caravan Tyres Causing Insurance Claims
By H Robinson

You may think wear and tear on caravan tyres only occurs when they are being used frequently. However, most damage occurs when the caravan is not in use. For example, caravans that are stood for long periods may cause their tyres to become misshapen with the weight of the 'van, not to mention damage to the rubber caused by exposure to sunlight.

This kind of tyre damage can make the tyres more at risk of punctures and in the worst cases 'blowouts'. Even a slightly deflated tyre can cause the caravan and tow car to become unstable and it is rare for a caravan to survive a 'blow-out'.

Insurance claims relating to burst tyres are not uncommon, but there are precautions you can take to help prevent it happening to you:

  • Tyres over 5 years old should be replaced. You should be able to find the manufacture date on the tyre itself
  • When the caravan is not in use for long periods, e.g. during the winter months, check tyre pressures regularly to ensure they don't get too under inflated.
  • The sidewalls of the tyres should be inspected for any signs of damage such as cracks or damage from impact.
  • Should the worst happen, a crash can be avoided if using Tyron wheel-safety-bands which are proven to reduce the risk of an accident should the caravan's tyres become deflated. Although they do not prevent the puncture occurring, they enable the driver to stay in control of the vehicle and find a safe place to change the tyre.

Why Choose a Caravanning Holiday?

Why Choose a Caravanning Holiday?
By H Robinson

Caravanning is becoming more and more popular with over 35,000* new caravans registered in the UK in 2007 and it's no wonder with all the benefits of a caravanning holiday.

If you're thinking about purchasing a touring caravan for the first time, but wonder whether caravanning is really for you, then read on to see why so many people take caravanning holidays every year in the UK.

Caravanning provides the freedom to choose your destination at a moment's notice, and, with your home from home attached; you can guarantee your accommodation is up to scratch! There are thousands of caravan and camping sites to choose from all over the UK, from quiet adult only sites to child friendly, family-oriented sites. There's bound to be a wealth of sites to cater for your needs.

For families on a budget, a caravan holiday provides a cheaper alternative to package deals abroad and for the retired, wanting a more relaxed way of life, avoiding the chaos of airports is a perfect excuse to hitch up that tourer!

With growing concern over global warming and our carbon footprint, caravanning is also a greener way to travel compared to flying with up to 50% less CO2 emissions per person** from the average towcar and caravan combination. So not only can you protect your bank balance with a caravanning holiday, but you can also help to protect the environment at the same time.

The British tourism industry can also benefit with many caravanning holidays being taken in the UK, bringing a much-needed income to local communities and helping to preserve our heritage. We can often forget about the great places to visit on our own doorstep, so why not take the opportunity to explore that Britain has to offer this summer?

Before you set off, don't forget to make sure your caravan is loaded correctly, the tyres are in good condition and you have valid insurance for your caravan especially if you are going abroad.

Top Tips For Securing Your Caravan - Part 1

Top Tips For Securing Your Caravan - Part 1
By H Robinson

Electronic Alarms

These offer extra security for your caravan and can deter any would be thieves as the noise could draw unwanted attention. The more expensive alarms will use both infrared PIR detectors and motion sensors, so anyone entering the caravan will cause the siren to sound.

Tracking Devices

Get your stolen touring caravan recovered in record time by fitting a caravan tracking device. When looking for a suitable tracking device for your caravan, look for a proactive satellite tracking system to track your tourer. These systems can alert you if the caravan is moved, whereas some tracking devices rely on you to realise the 'van has been stolen and inform them before they start to track the caravan. Also look for a device that is monitored by a specialist monitoring station so it doesn't fall to you to track your caravan and guide the police to its recovery.

Mechanical Security Devices

One of the simplest ways to secure your caravan is with a hitchlock and wheelclamp and this is often the minimum security requirement when insuring your caravan. They also provide a visible deterrent for would be thieves.

When shopping for security devices such as these, remember, it's important the device makes the theft of the caravan more difficult, so opt for heavy duty hitchlocks and wheelclamps.

You can also invest in corner steady locks that will prevent the caravan from being lifted at the front and towed away.

Identification Systems

All British caravans manufactured from 1998 are registered with a CRiS number. This works similar to a car's VIN number and means police can easily identify your caravan should it be stolen and recovered.

Another way to tag your caravan is with the Thiefbeater marking system, which uses a combination of pneumatic etching, electronic tags and microdots inside the caravan, which police can use to trace the owner.

What to Consider When Buying Your First Caravan

What to Consider When Buying Your First Caravan
By Harvey Taylor

So you've decided to purchase a caravan. You are aware of the responsibilities (including caravan insurance), the expenses and the maintenance that will have to be kept up. Do you know how to select the caravan that will be best for the purposes you have in mind? There are a lot of things to consider so you won't be buying a caravan that is too large and costs too much, or is perhaps too small to suit everyone in your camping crew. Here are a few things to think about when looking for the perfect tourer for you.

One of the biggest deciding factors in your purchase will be how the caravan will be used. If you are looking for something to holiday in, you should consider how many people generally go along on the trip, you will want to pick something with enough sleeping berths for everyone on the trip. If you're planning very short trips, the accommodations can be sparser -- you may not need the shower, oven, built in televisions, and other creature comforts, but will want extra storage and perhaps refrigeration.

If you are buying your caravan for a more family oriented purpose, expect to look for more comfort options, and keep in mind how many people you will usually be accommodating. Will your partner or children be travelling with you? Everyone will want differing amenities that you will have to plan for. Remember though, the more options you select, more maintenance, and expenses will be incurred.

More important than all the things that have been mentioned above, is your vehicle. If you purchase a tow-behind trailer that uses a ball hitch, you should have a heavy duty suspension package, or possibly look into air shock absorbers. The vehicle in question should also be in good condition, with a fairly powerful motor. If the auto you use is under-powered problems could occur very quickly. If the caravan that has caught your eye requires a fifth wheel, the cost can go really go up.

Okay, now you know which caravans are viable options, and maybe decided on the size, number of berths, and taken into consideration your wife's concerns about creature comforts and hygiene. Time to start looking!

Take a Trip to the Seaside With Your Caravan

Take a Trip to the Seaside With Your Caravan
By H Robinson

If you're hitching up your touring caravan and heading down to Devon, why not visit the resort of Sidmouth? It has been described as "a feast of visual delight" by the Poet Laureate John Betjeman and for good reasons.

Make the most of your stay by visiting the Donkey Sanctuary where more than 12,000 donkeys have been cared for in nearly 40 years. It's also great if you're taking children as they can get up close to the residents.

If you're heading east to Norfolk, try Wells-next-the-Sea - the quaint fishing town with long sandy beaches. There is plenty to do from bird watching to galleries and exhibitions. You can even take a boat trip to see the colony of common grey seals.

If you fancy a quick tipple, visit Whin Hill Cider in the main town car park and sample some of their cider, perry or apple juice.

The south coast of England is next on our agenda with the seaside town of Swanage. It's a great place for families with its award winning Blue Flag beach and resident Punch and Judy show.

One of its great attractions is the Swanage Railway that runs from Swanage to Norden passing through some great sights such as the Isle of Purbeck and the ruins of Corfe Castle.

Wherever you plan to go with your tourer caravan, don't forget to go prepared and insure your caravan with a reputable caravan insurance company before packing your deck chairs and setting off on your journey.

Have fun!

Insurance For a Caravan

Insurance For a Caravan
By Roger J Jones

Their proud owners may call caravans many things but 'cheap' is not a description often used. Even the smallest caravans are expensive and if you have a problem that involves theft or damage to them, you may end up seriously out-of-pocket unless you have good insurance for a caravan.

Insurance categories
Finding suitable insurance for a caravan is not always the easiest of tasks. To begin with, it is necessary to realise that the insurance selected may need to be appropriate to your vehicle as typically cover divides down into:

  • touring caravans;
  • static caravans;
  • motorhomes.

All of these types of caravan may have their own unique types of risk and therefore be in need of specific cover and protection.

Common factors

In the case all caravans, you'll probably be keen to get appropriate cover while, of course, keeping one eye on the costs.

There are a few things to keep in mind both from a common sense point of view and to help keep the costs of your caravan cover premiums down.

General

  • fitting security locks on doors and windows;
  • fully draining down all water systems when unoccupied;
  • removing or folding the awning when away from the vehicle;
  • high-value individual items such as cash, electronics and jewellery, may not be covered.

Static caravans

  • keeping your vehicle on an approved, secure and serviced site;
  • fitting hitchlocks and wheel clamps.

Tourers

· fitting hitchlocks and wheel clamps may be obligatory to obtain cover;

Motorhomes

· restricting the age and number of drivers;

· reducing the number of times that the vehicle is taken out of the country;

· keeping mileage down and driving outside of peak times.

The insurance for a caravan is inevitably specialist in nature. As a result, it is typically a good idea to consult an insurance provider that understands both your vehicle and the insurance market place inside out. Through this approach you may be able to find various options in the one location. It may help save you money, obtain more suitable caravan insurance cover and be a less frustrating experience.

Caravan Insurance Brokers

Caravan Insurance Brokers
By Roger J Jones

Getting the right elements of insurance cover for your caravan may not be the chore it used to be. The online services of caravan insurance brokers now mean that you can typically choose from a number of options based on your own specific requirements.

What's right for you

It's not just a question of getting the most suitable deal for you; you may need to be sure that your policy fits in with how you use your caravan.

Caravan insurance varies depending on the type of caravan that you have - tourer, static, motorhome etc. In addition to this though, the level of cover available varies depending on who supplies the policy.

This means that there is a lot of choice out there but the good news is that using the services of caravan insurance brokers means that it is easy to compare what's on offer.

Options

So for example, if you own a touring caravan and like to take your caravan abroad you may prefer a policy that incorporates European cover as standard together with a fairly good annual mileage allowance. On the other hand if you prefer to holiday in the UK, you don't want to pay for European cover you don't need.

Premium discounts

Some caravan insurance providers may also offer discounts that you may be eligible for, so using a broker may help you identify those suppliers where you can save yourself some money. This could include things like:

· being a member of a caravanning club;

· having off road parking facilities for your caravan;

· using a secure approved off-season storage site;

· using a site with no history of flooding;

· fitting security alarms, wheel clamps or hitchlocks (though these may often be obligatory as part of your caravan cover);

· etc.

What Type of Caravan Insurance Do You Need?

What Type of Caravan Insurance Do You Need?
By George McGonigal

This is one of the first decisions you have to make when looking into taking out caravan insurance. If you have a static caravan then you would have to take out insurance tailored to the static caravan. The same would apply if you have a touring caravan, then you would need tourer insurance which would provide you with different benefits tailored to the touring caravan.

There are some features and benefits that you would find in both touring and static insurance and one of these would be protection for your personal belongings and the items in your caravan. You will be taking a great deal of belongings with you whether you are holidaying in your static caravan or touring around. The first thing you would have to do is work out how much the contents of your caravan are worth. So go around and take an inventory of every single item in your caravan and don't forget items in wardrobes and cupboards as they can all add up. This amount would be the sum of money that you would get back to replace your items in the event that they were stolen, damaged or totally destroyed.

You would have to find out whether you would get brand new replacements from your claim or whether the provider would take wear and tear into account. If you got brand new replacements then you would have to pay out more for your premiums than if the policy took wear and tear into account.

If looking to take out caravan insurance for your static caravan then check the details of the policy to find out if the policy would pay out for such as awnings, steps, fencing and patio around your caravan. The majority of policies would include awnings and steps but there is generally a limit to what they would pay out for these so checking with the particular provider is essential.

When looking for touring insurance for your caravan and you plan on travelling around Europe then you would have to ensure that you added European cover into your policy. Providers will base this on so many days so again checking is essential. The policy would pay out in the event you were to have an accident and your caravan had to be towed and repaired, it would also pay out for you to stay in alternative accommodation if you could not stay in your caravan. The policy would pay for so many days and up to so much per day.

If you want to save on your caravan insurance then you could consider paying out more in excess than what the insurance company asks for. Excess is what all providers will ask for before they will take over the rest of the claim. While they will set a minimum amount that you could pay out you could offer to pay more and this would keep down the cost of the premiums. You would however have to take into account that you chosen amount would need to come out of your own pocket in a lump sum payment should you need to claim on your policy.

The Typical Caravan Insurance Policy

The Typical Caravan Insurance Policy
By Roger J Jones

There is, of course, no such thing as a typical caravan insurance policy! That's because there is no such thing as a typical caravan - to say nothing of the fact that caravan insurance providers see things differently to each other so their policies may also differ significantly.

When is a caravan not a caravan?

There are a number of vehicles that are sometimes all collectively called caravans. Yet they may be significantly different and bring with them, considerably different risk profiles.

Statics

If your caravan is not really designed to be regularly mobile but instead to be parked more or less permanently on one site then it is probably a static caravan. Typically they are occupied for a few weeks or months each year for mainly holiday and recreational purposes.

Tourers

These are caravans typically towed behind a conventional motor vehicle. They lack motive power of their own and are often used to tour around, parking at one or more sites during a mobile holiday.

Motorhomes

These are the caravans that are essentially built around a motor vehicle. They can be driven from site to site under their own motive power and may also be called campervans.

Trailer tents

Some people would argue as to whether or not these are, in fact, a caravan! They are often larger collapsible tents that are stowed on a towed trailer. When parked, the tent can be rapidly set-up and it may include the trailer as part of its overall structure.

Park homes

These are accommodation units that are typically based in the countryside on special residential parks. Once positioned, many park homes are no longer really mobile. They are typically permanently occupied.

The caravan insurance policy

Understandably, the insurance industry typically sees the above general categories as each having its own requirements in terms of insurance. Policies are often advertised under one of the above general headings though the actual cover and prices typically will vary depending upon the exact nature of the individual caravan. So, if you're thinking about your caravan insurance policy, looking at what's available on the market under the above headings might be the first step.
