Compact Fluorescent Lighting - The Basics

According to Energy Star studies, If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.

Energy saving features of the CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light)


  • Compact fluorescent bulbs use 1/4 the energy required by an incandescent bulb to produce the same level of light. They produce approximately 75 % less heat making them safer to operate and reducing the energy costs associated with home cooling.



  • CFLs on average last 8000 hours, more than 10 times the life of an incandescent bulb. The cost savings of a single CFL can approach $100 over the life of the bulb.



  • A single CFL may prevent emission of approximately 450 pounds of green house gases in its lifetime.



  • Rebates are widely available for the purchase of CFL bulbs, making them nearly as affordable as incandescent bulbs.

Early CFL bulbs did have some limitations. They used magnetic starter ballasts which resulted in a "flickering" light when turned on, and were slow to brighten to full strength. They also were non-dimming and were not available in 3-way bulbs (popular for reading lamps) and cast a harsh white light. Advances in technology have eliminated these problems. The typical CFL that you buy today uses a instant start electronic ballast (no flickering start), and cast a pleasing warm white light similar to that of traditional bulbs.

In addition, dimmable and 3-way CFLs are beginning to appear on store shelves as well! In fact a CFL is available for nearly any use- flood lighting, general, task, and even outdoor lighting applications exist! However, CFLs they do contain small amounts of mercury and therefore require proper disposal. But don't despair! These bulbs still use less mercury than incandescent bulbs!
