LED Tube Light Installation Made Simple

LED Tube Light Installation Made Simple

Author: James Wentworth

Installing LED tube lights is a great way to save money on electricity and get potentially hazardous fluorescent lights out of your home or office.  However, most LED tube lights on the market today can not just be directly installed in an existing fluorescent fixture.  You will have to make some simple modifications to the fixture to properly install the bulbs.  The good news is that installing an LED tube light in an existing fluorescent fixture is relatively simple.  In addition, you should be able to buy fixtures especially designed for LED tube lights in the near future, and they should actually be cheaper than the equivalent fluorescent fixtures.  This article will provide a brief overview explaining what you need to know in order to install the new energy-saving fluorescent tube lights in an existing fluorescent lighting fixture.

Fluorescent fixtures are designed to support a specific types and size of fluorescent tube.  A fluorescent tube is incorporated into a fluorescent lighting system which consists of two or three main components: (1) the fluorescent lamp (fluorescent bulb or tube), (2) the ballast, and (3) the starter system. In addition, the system for a tube lamp includes a lamp holder and a switch.  Depending on the particular fluorescent lighting system, the starter may be a replaceable component, a starter may not be required, or the starter function may be integrated into the ballast. The starting function may also rely on the physical design of the fixture. To retrofit a fluorescent light fixture to support an LED tube light, the ballast (and the starter if a separate one is present) must be disconnected.

Make sure that the LED replacement tube lights are the correct size for the fixture.  Also, always remember that when servicing a fluorescent fixture or lamp for any reason, electrical power to the entire fixture should be disconnected. This is not always practical in situations where a large number of fixtures are controlled from the same power control (such as in open office areas). In these cases, insulating gloves and a nonmetallic ladder should be used if the fixtures must be serviced when power is present.

You will need a few simple tools, including a wire cutter and wire stripper (often incorporated into the same tool), a pair of pliers, a screwdriver, and a few wire nuts for reconnecting the wires once you have removed the ballast.

Once the old bulbs are removed from the lamp holders and the electricity to the fixture is turned off, you will probably have to remove the reflector that is located behind the bulbs and provides a housing for the wiring and ballast that lie behind it.  Typically, it is fairly simple to remove the reflector or cover, but if it is not clear how to do this, you should consult the documentation from the fixture manufacturer.

If the fixture has an electronic ballast, you only need to remove that and then wire the power directly to the lamp holders, completing one circuit for each bulb.  This is fairly simple, and typically you can use the existing wire in the fixture and then just add some wire nuts.  If you have an older fixture with a magnetic ballast and starter, you will have to remove or open the starter and remove or short the magnetic ballast.

Depending on how much wire you have to work with, it is a good idea to leave long enough wires leading out of the ballast to be able to reconnect the ballast with wire nuts, if you should ever want to convert the fixture back to use for fluorescent bulbs or want to use the ballast somewhere else.  Typically, the ballast will have two screws or bolts holding it in place in the fixture, and these can be removed using a screwdriver or pair of pliers, as appropriate.  The ballast should be disposed of in accordance with local regulations as should the old fluorescent bulbs.  Because the fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of highly-toxic mercury, they should be treated as hazardous waste and disposed of accordingly.

Once the ballast (and starter, if one was present) have been removed and the wires reconnected to complete a circuit for each bulb, replace the reflector or cover over the wiring and the area where the ballast was located, and the LED tube lights can be inserted in the end sockets.  Unlike fluorescent bulbs which do not have a top or bottom, an LED tube light will have an obvious top and bottom, with metallic heatsink located on the backside of the tube and the LEDs visible under a lens on the side that will be aimed towards the area to be illuminated.  Place the cover back on the fixture (if there was one) and turn on the electricity.  Turn on the switch and if you have done everything properly, you should have as good or better lighting using approximately half the electricity and lasting as long as 50,000 hours or more.

New Lighting Standards for Saving Energy

New Lighting Standards for Saving Energy

Author: Keith Miller

California estimates its efficiency standards have saved more than $36 billion in energy costs since 1978, and will save another $43 billion by 2013. Stricter efficiency standards also help avoid rolling blackouts, reduce peak demand, and avoid the need to build new generating capacity.

What does this have to do with the rest of us? Environmental concerns don't stop at the state border. With global fuel and energy costs continually rising, it is worthwhile to take a look at the Title 24 regulations for ways to increase efficiency and energy savings for projects all across the nation.

Title 24 Requirements
Title 24 requires high efficacy lighting, occupancy sensors or dimmers in almost all spaces. In general, "high-efficacy" lighting is what we usually think of as energy-efficient lighting fixtures. Fluorescent and compact fluorescent (CFL) fixtures with electronic ballasts, as well as certain high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps fall into this category. Fluorescent and CFL fixtures with magnetic ballasts, incandescent lights and fixtures with incandescent sockets (regardless of the bulb type installed) are not considered high efficacy.

Title 24 guidelines and requirements specify the fixtures that should be used in almost all spaces for homes and buildings. Here are some of the room-by-room details:

Kitchens: At least 50% of the total wattage of the kitchen lighting must be from high efficacy lighting. Low-efficacy lighting must be controlled separately.

Bathrooms, Garages, Laundry and Utility Rooms: High-efficacy lighting or manual-on occupancy sensors are required.

Exterior Fixtures: Lighting that is attached to the home or building must be high efficacy, or a combination photo/motion sensor is required.

All Other Interior Spaces: High-efficacy lighting, occupancy sensors or dimmers are required.

Recessed Lighting: Housings must be both Type IC (insulated covered) and Type Airtight when installed in insulated ceilings.

Electronic Ballasts: Electronic ballasts (instead of magnetic ballasts) are required for all fluorescent lighting rated 13 watts or greater.

Often, when installing high-efficacy lighting in a room, it is not a simple "one for one" change. In some cases, the high efficacy lighting will have a greater light output while using less power. Other times, you'll find you have to specify the color of light you want in a room.

Keep these guidelines in mind while working on a project:

Specify the light output (lumens): While some high-efficacy fixtures have greater light output than incandescent lights, others will have lower output. For a rule of thumb, you should be able to "lumen match" the incandescent lighting by specifying fluorescent systems that emit the same amount of lumens, while using as little as one-fourth as much power.

Specify the appropriate color: Unlike incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lamps come in a variety of colors, from cool white to warm white. For most residential applications, it is better to specify warmer lamp colors (CCT equal to 2,700 to 3,000K), as these will give a softer, more comfortable feel.

Magnetic versus electronic ballasts: All ballasts are magnetic or electronic, but the electronic ballasts are more efficient. Magnetic ballasts can flicker, hum and have slow start-ups, all of which waste energy.

Specify the light output (lumens): While some high-efficacy fixtures have greater light output than incandescent lights, others will have lower output. For a rule of thumb, you should be able to "lumen match" the incandescent lighting by specifying fluorescent systems that emit the same amount of lumens, despite using up to one-fourth as much power.

Kitchen installations: Currently, incandescent and magnetic-ballast 13 watt CFL recessed housings/downlights are some of the most popular lighting types for today's kitchens. For an alternative, using a high-efficacy 26 watt downlight may actually allow you to reduce the total number of fixtures, while maintaining the same light level. This not only saves energy, but also saves time and labor.

Why are Digital Ballasts Better

Why are Digital Ballasts Better

Author: Susan Slobac

Before entering into a discussion as to why digital ballasts are superior to the old-fashioned magnetic core and coil types, it may be helpful to know exactly what a ballast system is in terms of hydroponic gardening and grow lights.

All standard grow lights used in hydroponic gardening – whether some type of metal vapor or fluorescent – employ a ballast system. This consists of a housing, within which is contained electronic components that in essence “prime the pump.” A fluorescent light has its own built-in ballast system; this builds up the energy required to activate the molecules inside the fluorescent tube, which in turn causes them to glow, emitting light. Metal Halide and HPS grow lights have “remote ballasts” which are housed inside a metal container. The components are what make up these lamps’ main power supply. Together, they function as a “pre-heater,” which allows electrical power to build up to the point that the lamp will run.

The drawback of these kinds of ballasts is that they build up the energy required to run the lamp, then sends it on all at once. The cold bulb is literally “slammed” with energy at full force. A good metaphor is the case of someone who puts a car in gear, disengages the clutch, revs the engine up to 4000 RPM then “pops” the clutch. “Pealing out” may be fun and impressive to onlookers (though illegal in most places), but as any automotive technician will tell you, can shorten the car’s engine and drive train considerably.

It is the same with standard ballasts; the sudden surge of electricity tends to shorten bulb life. In addition, standard coil-type ballasts cause the bulb to “strobe,” or flicker.

Digital ballasts eliminate this wear and tear on the bulb by providing a flow of electricity that starts out at a low level, then increases energy flow as the bulb warms up and achieves full brightness. Studies have shown that MH and LPS grow lights used with a digital ballast lost only 20 to 25% of their PAR luminescence (the wavelengths actually used by the plant) after one year; those used with a standard ballast had lost over twice at much over the same period.

It should be noted that digital ballasts vary in terms of quality and reliability. In general, products made in Chinese factories tend to be of inferior quality, and should be avoided. The best digital ballasts will run all types of grow lights, and be able to recognize the difference between metal halide, HPS or LED. If a bulb is defective, damaged or incompatible, or if a short circuit is detected a well-manufactured, U.S.- made digital ballast will automatically shutdown before a safety hazard is created.

Grow Lights That Use Digital Ballasts

Grow Lights That Use Digital Ballasts

Author: Susan Slobac

When it comes to grow lights and other electronic devices, a ballast is mechanism that acts as a type of resistor. Similar to the “power pack” used with electric trains, its purpose is to regulate the amount of electrical current flowing through a circuit.

If grow lights – such as metal halide, high pressure sodium or even fluorescent lights - were connected directly to a power outlet, they would continue to draw greater and greater amounts of electric current until they burned up, exploded, or destroyed the power source. This is why a ballast is necessary to your grow system. The ballast provides positive resistance which limits the flow of electricity to the grow light.

Traditionally, the ballasts used with grow lights have been similar to those found in old-time automotive ignition systems, i.e. a magnetic coil. The problem with these is that they were designed to build up a certain amount of electrical current required to operate the light; once this level was reached, the power would be delivered to the cold bulb all at once. This caused a great deal of wear on the bulb mechanism, shortening its useful life by a substantial degree.

The other problem involved “strobing,” or flickering. This flickering is not normally perceived consciously by human eyes, but it does exist – and again, causes grow-light bulbs to be less efficient.

New digital ballasts address these problems. First of all, electrical current is not fired off to cold bulbs all at once; instead, these ballasts start off by sending low levels of current to the bulb, then increasing the amount as the bulb warms up (known as “soft starting”). Digital ballasts also provide a smooth, even flow of electrical current, unlike magnetic core ballasts which cycle. This eliminates the destructive strobing action that causes bulbs to wear prematurely.

Another great feature of the digital ballast is that it is “intelligent.” Different types of grow lights have different power needs. In the past, it was necessary to have different ballasts for metal halide and HPS lamps, or at best, use a special (and often expensive) ballast that had a switch allowing one to change bulbs.

Today’s digital ballast is optimized to distinguish between different types of grow lights and adjust its output accordingly.

The result is that grow bulbs are effective over twice as long as those powered by a magnetic coil ballast.

This said, it should be noted that not all digital ballasts are created equal. These can vary tremendously in terms of quality and effectiveness. Some digital ballasts can actually harm your plants by delivering insufficient current to the bulb, limiting its ability to emit light.

On the other hand, whereas the performance of coil ballasts starts to degrade after about three years, digital ballasts do not.

If you are considering the purchase of a digital ballast, it is a good idea to do some comparison shopping, and be prepared to spend a bit extra; a new, but cheaply made imported digital ballast from China might be worse than even an old coil ballast made in the U.S.

What is a Ballast and Why Do I Need One

What is a Ballast and Why Do I Need One

Author: Susan Slobac

If you would like to give hydroponic gardening a try, one of the hydroponic supplies that you will need is HID lights. HID, or High Intensity Discharge, lamps will provide the strong light that plants need to thrive in an indoor setting. In order for these lamps to work properly, they must function in conjunction with a ballast.

An HID light consists of a glass tube that contains tungsten electrodes, gas and metals. You see light emit from the tube when an electrical arc is struck across the electrodes. The gas helps the light to start, and once the metals are heated they function to produce the light. Gardeners enjoy the benefits of using these grow lamps because they provide light that most closely resembles sunlight, a definite plus when you are growing plants indoors without exposure to sunlight. They are also cost efficient, because they last longer than other grow lamps and are more energy efficient.

The ballast is used to start the lamp and to allow the electricity to continue flowing through the bulb to keep the light on. The ballast's function is to control the electrical current running through the glass bulb so that there is just enough current flowing through so that the light ignites and is maintained, but not so much that the bulb is destroyed. Having said that, it is clear that you must use a ballast when you want to run your HID lights in order to control the electrical current; otherwise, they will not work properly.

There are three different types of ballasts that are used with high intensity discharge lights, and they include magnetic ballasts, electronic ballasts, and digital ballasts. A magnetic ballast is also called a core and coil ballast, which refers to the components inside the ballast. Along with a capacitor, they work together to control the current to ignite the light and keep the energy flowing at exactly the correct rate for the bulb. Some magnetic ballasts also come with an igniter, which are used in coordination with sodium and metal halide lamps. Electronic ballasts use electronic circuitry to control the electrical flow within the HID bulb. A digital ballast works on a higher frequency, so it produces more light but uses less energy to do so. The digital aspect of the ballast allows it to function at consistently correct temperatures, which helps the mh lamps to last longer.

You will need the proper ballast made to work with the specific HID lamp you would like to use. There are several types of bulbs, including mercury vapor, low and high pressure sodium, and metal halide. The ballasts can vary depending on the bulb's wattage and type, so that you can get exactly what you need.

How to Maintain your Ballast and Help Lengthen Its Life

How to Maintain your Ballast and Help Lengthen Its Life

Author: Susan Slobac

Smart individuals who practice hydroponic gardening understand the value of using HID lamps and HPS lights. Each of these types of lights that are used in the greenhouse or home require a ballast for their proper function. Correct maintenance of your hydroponics equipment will help ensure its long life, thereby saving you money.

High Intensity Discharge lights are favored by horticulturists and gardeners because they produce more light and a greater intensity of light than other types of lamps. These lights consist of a quartz or alumina inner tube built into the grow lamps. Inside this tube you will find tungsten electrodes, gas, and metals. When you turn the electricity on, an electrical arc flows over the electrodes. The gas inside the tube helps illuminate the lamp initially, and the metal produces a continuous light as long as the electricity stays on. A ballast is used to control the flow of the electrical current to the HID bulb. With no ballast, uncontrolled current would flow into the grow lights unchecked, blowing up the bulb, so the ballast is vital to its proper operation.

When you are using artificial light indoors to grow plants, what you are trying to do is imitate the light that would ordinarily come from natural sunlight. Plants use this light to produce food for the plant, to ensure its proper growth and reproductive functions. Light falls into two broad spectrums in relation to plant growth. The blue spectrum is used by plants when they are in the early stages of growing. The red and orange spectrums facilitate a plant's ability to produce flowers, which occurs in later stages of growth. In terms of HID lamp use, none of this light would be possible without the use of a ballast.

Although magnetic ballasts were first used with HID lights, electronic and digital ballasts have gained in popularity. They offer a greater degree of control over the electrical current, with the electrical and digital units helping the light systems to function at a greater efficiency for a lower cost than is possible with a magnetic ballast. They are less bulky and have a lower weight than magnetic ballasts, and also run much quieter and start quicker than the magnetic units.

As is typical with many types of electronic circuitry, one aspect of maintenance of the ballast that is crucial is to run the ballast at the proper temperature level. To neglect this one simple fact is to greatly reduce the life of your ballast. You can lengthen the effective life of the electrical ballast by ensuring that the ambient temperature is cooler than the recommended fixture temperature. You can as much as double the life of your ballast easily by cooling the air around it.

Digital Ballasts are Energy Efficient

Digital Ballasts are Energy Efficient

Author: Mose Cagen

Digital ballasts use switching electronics and small frequency inductors to control current and voltage to the lamp. They even contain a microprocessor like what you would find in a home computer. These characteristics allow the grower to use digital ballasts with both metal halide and high pressure sodium bulbs, and without degrading the bulbs. The design of these digital ballasts also offer the grower a power efficiency that the typical mechanical ballasts just can't match.

One of the great advantages of this power efficiency is start up power. Digital ballasts utilize "soft start" technology which means that they use very low start up currents (amps). This is a big advantage to growers who are using multiple ballasts because it allows you to turn on more ballasts at the same time from the same outlet/timer. Most timers have 10-15 amp contacts and can usually only handle 2 x 600w magnetic ballasts at a time before the contacts go. Typically when this happens your timers won't turn on or off, or you could possibly blow a circuit fuse.

Using digital ballasts, the grower is able to start up as many as 4 x 600w ballasts at a time off of a single timer. Even this lower energy use at start up can even help save money on your energy bills! One other advantage to the power efficiency of digital ballasts is that when you have a larger setup, having multiple mechanical ballasts drops your power voltage as you add more ballasts. This leads to lower light output, and lower yields. Using digital ballasts you won't have this problem as the energy use is more efficient.

Energy efficiency is huge these days with people going green in many areas of their lives. Energy costs are only going up so make the smart decision today and buy a digital ballast instead of a mechanical/magnetic ballast!

What is a Digital Ballast

What is a Digital Ballast

Author: Mose Cagen

Digital, or electronic, ballasts are relatively new to the indoor growing scene. Their counterpart, magnetic ballasts, use technology that has been around for more than 100 years! More and more people are switching to the new and improved electronic ballasts to take advantage of the gains in efficiency. Some tests have shown that digital ballasts are as much as 30% brighter than some magnetic ballasts. Digital ballasts also use energy much more efficiently meaning that more lumens are produced per watt of energy consumed.

Digital ballasts do not have the typical transformers, capacitors, or igniters. These are some of the components that make mechanical ballasts so much bigger and louder than digital ballasts. Instead, digital ballasts use electronic circuitry to accomplish the same thing as these other components but more efficiently, quieter, and by using less energy. One thing that surprises many people is that these mechanical ballasts use more energy than what the ballast is rated for. For example, a 600 w mechanical ballast can use up to 800 w of energy to light that 600 w bulb! The inefficiencies of the mechanical ballasts also send energy to the bulb in a way that shortens the bulbs life, where as a digital ballast sends a constant flow of energy, allowing the grower to get maximum potential lifetime out of the bulb. After one year of use the plant usable light coming from bulbs that are run on digital ballasts has decreased only by 20-25% where as the same bulb being used in the coil type ballast would have lost 50-60% of its plant usable light over the same period of time.

Digital ballasts also allow the grower to run both MH and HPS bulbs through the same ballast without having to change anything. Digital ballasts are able to recognize each type of bulb and make the needed changes automatically to ensure the system will work properly. No more switches or additional ballasts when growing in the two different phases!

HID Lights are getting more and more popular in the automotive industry, you may also notice that there are a pair of hid bulbs and pair of ballasts for your hid conversion kits, and how important is the ballast on the whole kit ?

Installing it in your vehicle you can get superior lighting even in the worst driving condition. It can offer you unparalleled illumination for the rest of your car's life.

The typical single beam HID Conversion Kits comprises HID Bulbs and HID Ballasts. Ballast is a power converter usually from normal headlights 55 watts into 35 watts. It is easy to install, requiring only mounting the ballasts and connecting the power source to the ballast, into the bulbs. Motorcycles in general need thinner ballasts known as slim ballasts and it is easier to install for a motorcycle which has small space. It is possible to increase High and Low beam of the vehicle to enhance the view and to enhance the attractiveness of the vehicles.

HID ballast starts the lamp and let the electricity to flow continuously through the bulb to keep the light on. It is the job of a ballast to regulate the electrical current running through the glass bulb. As a result, enough current can flow through to enable the light to catch light and maintain. In other words their usage is essential to run your HID lights in order to control the electrical current. Or else, they will not work well.

HID ballast has been divided into three categories that are used with high intensity discharge lights. These are magnetic ballasts, electronic ballasts, and digital ballasts. Magnetic ballast is also known as a core and coil ballast, which suggests the element inside the ballast. Together with a capacitor, they work jointly to manage the current to ignite the light and continue the energy flowing at exactly the required rate for the bulb. Some magnetic ballast is also offered with an igniter, which are used along with sodium and metal halide lamps. The electronic circuitry is used in electronic ballasts to control the electrical flow within the HID bulb. A digital ballast is more valuable as it it produces more illumination but uses less energy to do so. It operates at constantly correct temperatures, which helps the bulbs to last longer.

Why a Digital Ballast is Superior to a Magnetic Ballast

Why a Digital Ballast is Superior to a Magnetic Ballast

High Intensity Discharge lights work wonderfully in hydroponic applications. Not only do HID lamps produce light that mimics sunlight more closely than light produced by other light bulbs, but it does so using less energy and in a manner that extends the life of the grow lamps. Any type of HID light that you choose to use for hydroponic gardening will require a lamp ballast. There are three basic types of ballasts available for lamps used in a hydroponic garden: magnetic, electronic, and digital ballasts. Digital ballasts are superior to magnetic ballasts for several reasons.

A magnetic ballast is needed to control the electrical current that flows through the HID lamp. The ballast both ignites the light and keeps it lit. If electrical current was to flow into the light bulb at full voltage, the bulb would burst, so the controlling factor offered by the ballast is necessary for the correct function of any HID light. A magnetic ballast consists of one or more aluminum or copper coils that sit on a core that is made up of steel laminations. The coils and core work in conjunction with a capacitor, and sometimes an igniter. These four parts are most often built into the ballast casing.

A digital ballast offers the same electricity control as does the magnetic ballast, but with the digital model the current conforms to optimal levels of performance for each specific type and wattage of lamp, possible through digital circuitry. Magnetic ballasts weigh more than do digital ones, a consideration in a greenhouse setting, and they also run hotter than digital units. Because of the more consistent application of electrical current, the lamps last longer and function at a higher level using less power with a digital ballast than they might with a magnetic ballast. With a digital ballast, the light produced is more consistent. Magnetic ballasts, especially as they age, become more noisy when they operate, cause the HID lamps to flicker and also contribute to irregularities in the color that the lamp gives off. The digital units can also sense when the lamp is almost used up, and can shut the unit off when it is not functioning optimally.

The specific type of ballast you will need will depend on the HID lamps wattage and type you use. There are four types of HID lights, which consist of metal halide, high pressure as well as low pressure sodium, and mercury vapor. Each one offers advantages regarding efficiency, lamp longevity, color stability and brightness that you will want to take into consideration depending on how you will use the lamp with your plants. The stage of life of your plants will factor into which lamp will best meet your plants' needs.

Sylvania Replacing Magnetic Ballasts with Electronic

Sylvania Replacing Magnetic Ballasts with Electronic

Author: Blair E

Everyone can look forward to flicker-free fluorescent lighting very soon, as Sylvania along with other lighting manufacturers are no longer allowed to produce magnetic ballasts. Magnetic ballasts were the cause of the fluorescent flicker so many people have been irked by over the years.

The flicker occurs because each time a magnetic ballast crosses 0 volts, the lamp will flicker 120 times a second; this happens nearly constantly, hence the annoying flicker. Along with this annoyance, certain voltage/frequency scenarios can cause a magnetic ballast to be unable to uphold the required parameters to keep a lamp lit. Nonetheless, they have always been quite reliable, evidenced by their 60+ years of existence.

Ballasts allow fluorescent lighting and HID (high intensity discharge) lighting to work. Light bulbs of that sort can't work without a ballast to provide the voltage spikes for lamp ignition, and thereafter to regulate the voltage to maintain light. Electronic ballasts improve upon a lot of the failings of the magnetic ballasts. The most important part is that because electronic ballasts run at such high frequencies, the flicker is not perceptible by the human eye. That means no more flicker!

More improvements include the use of solid state electronics for converting AC to DC to AC at the aforementioned very high frequencies. There is also a far wider range of frequency and voltage that electronic ballasts can handle, so it is rare for them to be unable to power a lamp at any time.

The best and most noticeable effect of electronic ballasts is the lack of flicker. As the last of magnetic ballasts are used up, we will eventually have flicker-free lighting everywhere!
