Cheap Dental Insurance In My Childhood

Cheap Dental Insurance In My Childhood

Author: Leonard Greenhall

My parents were working class people and in the 1950' there was only one form of cheap dental insurance and that was to submit you to the dental students at their training centers.

I was taken their often as a child because it was a form of cheap dental insurance that the working class could manage. Those were the days when the finer forms of dental surgery and dental cosmetics were unheard of and the pearly white smiles of today's generation were not possible. Those were times when the main job at the cheap dental option was to have teeth extracted.

However at the student center we were subject to the efforts of students, which could often be clumsy, and if they were doing their first year of practical under the guide of their supervisors they often needed corrections.

My memory of the cumbersome equipment, which vibrated your whole skull when they drilled a cavity, was not pleasant. But you were there because it was the only cheap dental insurance you could get and even while it was not called insurance it amounted to the same thing. Its only benefit was that it came with no costs.

Another factor, which brings back memories for me, was the long waiting time because there was many of the working class for whom it was the only option for dental treatment. And also to remember being in a dental chair alongside about 20 other dental chairs of others getting treatment would be a horror story to today's generations.

As I grew into adult hood I found work and now was a paying customer for dental treatment however I never entered into any form of cheap dental insurance simply because most people of my generation opted for extractions and false teeth as the full cure for all their dental problems
